Madder, rubia tinctoria
The roots of the madder plant are a potent source of red and orange dye, going back to ancient times. A perennial with star shaped leaves, square stems, small yellow flowers and a black berry. But it is the red, pencil thin roots which provide the dye. Produces the most dye if roots are not harvested until the third season. Once established, it grows well and spreads quickly.
Begin indoors 6 weeks before last frost, and keep very warm (70F). Can take 2 weeks to germinate. Transplant 12” apart in warm soil and cover with mulch.
