Cochineal (Dactylopius coccus) is a scale insect, native to South and Central America, which has been used as a dyestuff since before the 15th century.

Producing gorgeous shades of pink, red, and purple, cochineal is very concentrated and can be used at around 4-8% wof for medium depth of shade.

Cochineal is not a substantive dye and requires the use of a mordant. Read more about mordants in our FAQ's, and shop for them here.

This cochineal made beautiful fuschias and pinks. I got tons of fiber dyed with a small amount.ot as a gift for my friend. Good size package and seems like it’s good quality. The package is also resealable, which is really nice. I think my friend will really like it.
