Beginner Shibori and Indigo Dyeing Video
Our very first online learning video! An in depth look at shibori and indigo dyeing, aimed at beginners. In this 2 hour video, Julie guides you through fourteen different methods to bind, fold, stitch and manipulate fabric to create pattern. Examples are demonstrated on our Organic Cotton Napkins.
She then guides you through creating an indigo vat using our Indigo Kit, as well as how to tell when it's ready to dye, special tips for using it, oxidizing, and how to rinse and neutralize after dyeing. There are also segments on preparing your fabric for dyeing, choosing thread for stitched shibori, and little tricks like the best way to tie a knot.
The video is divided into chapters and comes with a detailed PDF so that you can choose the shibori techniques that you would like to try, and skip ahead to those segments.
The video will be sent as a digital download, and instructions on how to download it will arrive as soon as your purchase is complete. A password is needed to access the video, the password can be found just below the link to the video on the pdf, after purchase.
It is also available as a bundle with everything you need to get going - one Indigo Kit, six Organic Cotton Napkins, a skein of extra strong nylon thread, and the video. With this option, the video will still be available immediately, and the kit and supplies will be sent to you in the mail.
Customer Reviews
The video was excellent and detailed. All instructions were easy to follow. I had great success with both the dye and the stitched napkins. It all worked out exactly as the video detailed.
Hi Julie, I have watched and enjoyed your entire video and the napkins, along with six scarves I bought directly from Maiwa, have been scoured in soda ash and Synthrapol. I am heading to Huntsville in two weeks for a dye day with my old guild.
I have templates cut out and will be busy stitching this week in preparation.
Thank you for your hard work preparing the video.

Julie did a fantastic job to help a beginner understand the complicated world of chemistry and all that goes in to making a successful dye. The various stitches and methods of folding fabric were well explained and the video was well documented so that you can easily return to find the method that you wish to re-watch. I have made over 20 napkins and made two pots of dye since watching this video and the finished product exceeded my expectation. Highly recommend this video!
I’ve taken a number of workshops with Julie and I’m now excited to Shibori stitch and indigo dye some napkins! So many techniques to try! Julie starts off with very simple ones and shows how simple stitching can transform the napkins. If you have bought an indigo kit from Julie before but haven’t had the courage to use it, this video is for you! Go for it!
