Printing with Natural Dyes Class
The mordant printing workshop is two three hour sessions, either week after week, or all in one day. In the class, we use three different thickened mordants, and two dyestuffs, to create pattern on fabric with natural dyes.
Students use freezer paper to create stencils, then paint the thickened mordants onto the cloth. It is also possible to print with lino cuts, woodblocks or silk screens. After the mordant dries, we take it through the "dunging" process, which fixes it on the fabric, before dyeing each piece in either cochineal or weld.
