When making an indigo vat, you require three things: the indigo extract, an alkali, and a reducing agent.

Fructose is a great option as a reducing agent, as it is inexpensive, food safe and easy to use.

Combine with indigo and an alkali to create a vat and create blue!

A common recipe for creating a fructose vat uses a 1:2:3 ratio, or 1 part indigo : 2 parts calx : 3 parts fructose. For example for 50g indigo, you need 100g calx and 150g fructose.

Bulk dyes such as these ones do not come with instructions - if you are new to indigo dyeing, you may want to begin with our Indigo Kit, which has the pre-measured quantities of each ingredient that you need, as well as comprehensive instructions which lead you through creating and dyeing with your first vat.

Useful size!

It was great to be able to buy the components of the Indigo kit in larger quantities to continue my experimenting with the dyeing process.
