Grow your own dye garden!
Calendula - calendula officinalis
Cheerful and easy to grow, calendula is not a traditional dyestuff, as the yellows that it produces have only moderate colourfastness. While we don't therefore recommend it for dyeing 'heirloom' items such as quilt fabric, it can still be fun to use for bundle dyeing or dyeing less precious items such as clothing. It is also an all around stellar plant to grow: it is edible, can be used in skin care, the cut flowers are gorgeous, and it is easy to grow and maintain.
Begin indoors 4 weeks before last frost, or direct seed after frost danger has passed and again in the early fall. Plant in a sunny location and keep evenly moist. Grows well in regular soil, needs little care.
