Black Hopi Sunflower Seeds - helianthus annus
A classic yellow sunflower, but with dark purple seeds that were traditional used by indigenous people of North America to dye basketry materials. Produces purple and pink dyes depending on the pH of the bath, the colours are only moderately colorfast. While we don't therefore recommend it for dyeing 'heirloom' items such as quilt fabric, it can still be fun to use for bundle dyeing or dyeing less precious items such as clothing, and is fun to experiment with the pH. The seeds also are edible and the blooms are gorgeous.
Direct sow outdoors after frost in a sunny location with well draining soil. Thin to 18 inches apart, and make sure to plant where it has room for height. Fertilize every 2-3 weeks.
