Grow your own dye garden!

Woad, isatis tinctoria

A historically important source of blue dye going back to Roman times.  Contains a lower concentration of indican than other forms of indigo, but grows very easily in temperate climates, and is very hardy.  Plants will grow up to a height of 3 feet, and produce a cheerful yellow flower.  Leaves yield lovely soft blue dye.

Begin indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost or direct sew after frost. Sow thinly and cover with twice seeds thickness. Thin to 12-36 inches apart.  Thrives in full sun and can be sewn in spring, summer or early fall.

Fast germination

It’s been less than a week since planting, and there are already sprouts! Here’s hoping I can keep them alive!
