Woad, isatis tinctoria
A historically important source of blue dye going back to Roman times. Contains a lower concentration of indican than other forms of indigo, but grows very easily in temperate climates, and is very hardy. Plants will grow up to a height of 3 feet, and produce a cheerful yellow flower. Leaves yield lovely soft blue dye.
Begin indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost or direct sew after frost. Sow thinly and cover with twice seeds thickness. Thin to 12-36 inches apart. Thrives in full sun and can be sewn in spring, summer or early fall.
