Madder (rubia tinctorium) is the root of a herbaceous perennial plant belonging to the coffee family.  It can grow in temperate climates, such as Canada, and gives strong clear shades of orange and red. The colour will change depending on the hardness/softness (calcium content) of your water.  Purple shades can be achieved with an iron mordant.

Use at 12-35% wof.  Don't boil, as it will bring out the brown.

Madder is not a substantive dye and requires the use of a mordant.  Read more about mordants in our FAQ's, and shop for them here.

well packaged

This madder root powder came fully sealed which I appreciate as I've ordered powdered dyes that have spilled in transit! This was my first time using madder in particular for dyeing, I used half the bag (50g) and my colors were on the pale side. I believe the lime scale of my water wasn't quite hard enough but I used iron to shift the color towards the end and the results were so interesting! Here is a picture of my swatches on cotton using alum mordant! So much fun!

gorgeous color

The first round of madder dye gave me a lovely sunset orange fiber. I'm going to add some Ca(CO3)2 to this vat to go deep on the colors. The residue madder is going into an indigo vat. So excited to see how this experiment evolves!
