Sulphur cosmos - cosmos sulphureus
Lovely blooms of yellow to orange, with some red tips, the cosmos flower has become a popular choice for flower pounding or tatakizome, as the flower has a nice compact centre, and the leaves a lovely shape. This 'bright lights' mix will yield flowers that produce shades of yellow and orange on cloth. Cosmos is not a traditional dye plant, and only has moderate colourfastness, so it is not recommended for an heirloom item such as a quilt, but is a great choice for experimenting with tatakizome on items such as clothing. Cosmos are also a cheerful flower that are great for bouquets, and attract bees and butterflies!
Begin indoors 4 weeks before last frost, or direct seed after frost danger has passed. Transplant to garden once temperatures are above 10 degrees. Several sewings can give you continuous blooms. Plant in a sunny location in dry soil. Grows well in regular soil, needs little care. Can grow to up to a metre tall, so place behind shorter plants. Dead head often to make way for new blooms.
